Tim Knowles Tree Drawings

Artist Tim Knowles ties pens to trees to create Tree Drawings. The photos of the tree with pen reaching out to the canvas are mesmerizing.

Since it is early morning, I can't think of other artists who use exterior automata to create art (with an exception of Tim Hawkinson). Do you have any favorite artists like Knowles?

Can Knowles be called the artist? He sets it all up, but it's the trees that do the work. I saw on Sunday Morning a dog artist which was actually kind of cool. The dog clawed and bit at a canvas covered in colored transfer paper. The owner never tried to take credit as an artist, as the dog did all the work. (he still gets the money, but still)

The Grubbykid says:

Of course he is an artist. By your standard Peter Eisenman's wasn't the architect of Aronoff Center for Design and Art because he used generative algorithms.

In both cases the artist/designer picked the location, medium, type of automata, etc.

seriously? people are calling this art? Sounds like someone has been hittin the ganga pipe a bit too hard. Lets be real here people! puttin markers up in trees to make random marks on campus is just dumb, its like a schtoopid video by some silly hipsters on New York Noise.

Also, did Eisenman (or his office, lets start giving credit to real people shall we) use a computer? I'm not sure how generative algorithms are utilized without....

This is the permanent home of Tim Knowles Tree Drawings. I wrote this post at 02:12 on June 14, 2007. This post is part of grubbykid.com, a weblog. If you liked this entry, why don't you read some other posts such as Peek Inside the New Bay Bridge or Bush Administration states OVP not part of Executive Branch; wants National Archives abolished? Or you could go to the site archives or return home. All are good choices.
