le Tour Shakeup
untitled, originally uploaded by C.H. Photo
I was all set to write my yearly post about the start of Canal le Tour - the Tour de France - but today I'm not in the mood. Seven riders were suspended from competition for being on the Operación Puerto list in Spain. Most ominously, two favorites to win this year. Ivan Basso (CSC) and Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile), and one sentimental favorite Francisco Mancebo (AG2R), are on the list and have been sent home.
This doesn't even come close to what happened in 1998, when a car for the Festina team was found with literally a trunk full of illegal and controlled substances.
Part of me wants to call bullshit on this whole matter: if the Spanish who are running Operación Puerto want to try the riders in a court of law or by arbitration, fine. But everything which has come out have been leaks from the Spanish timed precisely for the start of the Tour. Yet, the Spanish authorities are handing over documents to the authorities as we speak, I cannot wholly discount any of this, and this makes me sad. I'll still be watching Saturday morning, but this is insane.
But....
This changes the race completely. Look at the current gambling line, which gives Alejandro Valverde (ILL) a 6.4 to 1 chance of winning! But I would not be counting the Americans out - this change of events gives Floyd Landis - the Mennonite star (Phonak), George Hincapie - who is the nicest rider in the peloton (Disco), and David Zabriskie (CSC) who rode in the Maillot Jaune until he crashed during the TTT last year a chance at podium this year. I would watch what happens on Saturday's Prologue to see who's the most in shape, and has the mental game on.
As usual, the best commentary is from the TdF Blog, you can follow the race on EuroSport (where the often have an audio feed), and check out the official website for stage by stage information, and of course, watch the damn Tour on OLN - check out the TV Schedule.

At the end of the Mermaid Parade (more here), when the crowds had gone away and rain was impending, a man who appears to have stood at his post for many parades looks on.
For those waiting for le Tour: Dave Zabriskie talks about Russian mullets - it is a shame that he went down on the TTT last year, he certainly is one of my favorites

Letterpress: A Great Gift
Printing "Boondoggler", originally uploaded by Jason Santa Maria
Jason Santa Maria took a Letterpress course and his photos from that class are amazing. What makes working with letterpress is the convergence of the nostalgic and the craft of setting the type, laying the ink out, and operating the treadle makes a mockery of any desktop publishing software suite. Just look at the presses, and remember how beautiful they are when you are laying out your next comp.
Note to any Grubsketeers out there: items such as font sets, letterpresses, and courses to do this sort of thing would make a certain kid very happy.
Just sayin'.

DeVotchKa

Herself was awarded two free tickets to a concert featuring DeVotchKa (obligatory MySpace page) who I've never heard about; luckily, we went and it was an amazing concert: DeVotchKa combines folk music and rock, similar to 3 Mustafas 3, but without the schtick. The quartet played to an enthusiastic crowd, and put on an amazing show. I would recommend listening to their 2004 release, How It Ends, but if you don't want to shell out money, here's a live recording from a year ago.
Look for more photos from the concert at Flickr under the tag DeVotchKa.

holy crap - I thought descriptions of the PnP scene was insanse, but this takes the cake Update - Kottke has links which don't disprove the story, but take to task parts of it; notably Dan Savage and most completely by Andrew Sullivan, take parts of the article apart. Even Later Update - check out Chasing Bugs or the Truth? which finally puts the nail into this story. Verdict: Myth!

I have some kick-ass friends. Some friends who do amazing things. Like strike out on their own and design kickin' clothes. My friend Michelle has just opened up a new boutique in Greenpoint called Dalaga NYC, where she is selling her own line (you can see some of her work here), and select other lines. As the shop continues to open up, she will unveil more and more of her line. So check it out.

Autumn Bowl Lives
» x « · comments (0) | older photos »
While I had heard that the Autumn Bowl (see a previous photo), had survived the Greenpoint Terminal Market fire (see all of my fire photos), I hadn't gone down to check out the remains until this weekend.
After talking to the few people in the bowl, everything seems alright; although, those with keys are understandably doubly wary of outsiders, since they had almost lost the space to the fire. Only a few days of heavy smoke smell and some light smoke damage was all the Autumn Bowl sustained - which is quite a miricle.
See the rest of my Greenpoint Terminal Market remains photos and all of my fire photos (which was published btw) on Flickr.

Hey, if you want to see me talk about all things NYC architecture, I'll be on the Brian Lehrer Live show on Wednesday @ around 7:45pm. on CUNY TV, channel 75 (on most cable systems throughout the 5 boroughs).
Watch and laugh with me (not at me)!
If someone wants to digitize this, I would appreciate it.

So that was fun, I don't think I embarrased myself too much. The last 10 minutes or so of the 45-minute interview I found myself straying from the question, but almost couldn't help myself.
So it goes.
