Pro-Lynching Senators

Pro-Lynching Senators, by StatePro-Lynching Senators, by State

Update: Let me preface this by saying that while this resolution may seem "trivial," it surprises me not who has not cosponsored the resolution. Who cosponsored the resolution is important because a group of Southern Senators struck a deal with the GOP leadership to have the vote take place as a voice-vote, thus no record of which Senator voted for or against is available. Senators are there in DC to cast votes on bills and resolutions, and when they fail to, or worm their way out of that vote, it is unhelpful to our system. While there has been some admirable research on why the 20 didn't cosponsor, the fact of the matter is that all 100 should have cosponsored and there should have been a roll call vote. Spineless.

There are also some who have heaped scorn on my rhetoric - my response is that you're either with us or against us lynching. I will have more on this later - in a less strident tone.

Via Kos, we finally have the names of the 20 Senators who refused to co-sponsor the anti-lynching resolution passed yesterday, and then refused a roll-call vote so they'd have to go on the record for or against lynching.

Update - I think it should be clear that what happened last night was that a few Senators (the report is about six) were in the Senate Chamber, and instead of calling for a roll-call vote - where each and every Senator would be called to vote - they had a voice vote. You can have a voice vote with as few as one Senator (as long as no one calls for a Quorum Call). Additionally, Senators can sign on as co-sponsor to resolutions after the vote is taken. So what the crap is holding these people up?

So while it is admirable that the Senate is apologizing, there is a bunch of Senate staffers lying to their constituents about last night's vote. The voice-vote ensures that Senators can either take credit for it or deny they voted for it. Check out the map above and decide for yourself which scenario will happen in which state.

Additionally, there is some confusion how many Senators actually co-sponsored this resolution, but the list of 20 I have below is fairly solid. The point still stands that all 100 Senators should have co-sponsored this resolution - to not do so is to be abjectly pro-lynching.

Funny how 26% of the GOP's representatives to the Senate are Pro-Lynching. Guess Dean was right about the GOP being predominantly white - and apparently delight in lynching Black people. Let the demagoguery continue!

I think it is high time for some good old fashion demagoguery. Why on earth did this resolution not have 100 Co-Sponsors?

Who the hell is Pro-Lynching? These Senators are:

Hmm... 19 Republican and a Democrat from North Dakota. You all are real winners.

Let the Demagoguery Begin!

Update 15 June 2005
The following is the updated list of Senators not cosponsoring the resolution:
