Most Gratuitous use of a Lesbian Plot Twist

So tonight was the last episode for Elisabeth Rohm's character A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn on Law & Order. There has been much discussion on the internets about how bad her character was - there was even a petition. In a word, this is why.

So tonight was her last episode, and I was wondering if they were going to kill her like they did so many other characters, but Senator Fred Dalton Thompson (great in Die Hard 2, horrible in the Appropriations Committee) just off and fired here. Which was kind of lame. But what made my roommate and I go, "What . the . fuck!" was the following exchange:

Rohm: Is this because I'm a lesbian?

Thompson: No, no... Of course not. (look befuddled)

Rohm: Good...that's good... (stare off camera, and shake head)

Again, WHAT . THE . FUCK?

Could this have been the worst hackneyed ending to a character's story-line? It was so out of place, and Rohm and the distinguished Senator handled it so badly, with such bad acting, it will go down as one of the worst (or best) endings of the year and we are less than a fortnight past the new year.

Congratulations, Law & Order, you get the award for "Most Gratuitous use of a Lesbian Plot Twist" of 2005. This is a high honor, and I am sure you will put it right next to your Emmy's.

Elisabeth Rohm always hand me guessing that she was a lesbian. on and off screen. If you were to read some articles, i.e. STUFF magazine article, she clearly sounds like she is a closet case and is in such denial. She is using poor Dan Abrams to cover her true sexual identity. If you tell me, I think it was her idea to say she was a lesbian in that episode. She figures if she can't say it in REAL LIFE, she might as well played it as a character. That episode was poorly conducted at the end. When she even said she was a lesbian, it sounded as if she was ACTUALLY feeling it. And trust me, she's not that good of an actress. She really felt those words.

John, I would have to disagree with you. I think this was Law & Order tying to find another way to get rid of a character without killing them - and have a twist ending. I don't know where I heard this, but it is said that the writers of L&O only write in personal information pertaining to its' reoccurring characters once per season - I guess in order to keep them as archetypal as possible. But your insinuation that she is a lesbian purely by her bad acting skills and some sort of interview is preposterous and juvenile. I just wish there was a point we could get at where sexuality (and race, and religion, and...) doesn't matter - but being gay and on TV is still a big deal - just look at how Fox is pimping Mischa Barton's girl-girl kiss on the The OC. Obviously there are still people talking about L&O, so they won.

As one website noted, this was a way in which to provide a minority character without having to deal with it. Plus it provides some nice controversy (I don't personally think sexual preference is in any way controversial, but I am unfortunately not the mainstream). It was very much not what Law and Order is about. They seldom ever delve into any character's private life, but focus on the crime and trial. It was wholy unneeded, and merely a buzz generator.

I think sweetchuck has a point about the producer's wanting to "...provide a minority character without having to deal with it." Which is kind of frustrating because Law & Order have been fairly good about including the different type of nationalities which comprise New York City and treating them as people not stereotypes. Case in point: the recent episode of Law & Order: SVU about Asian gangs in Chinatown was without race-baiting overtones. Outing Rohm's character in the last 30 seconds of her character's story arc is just really, really cowardly. Even NYPD:Blue handled homosexuality of a reoccurring character better than L&O.

I like the Law & Order series, I don't see what was to hate about Ms. Rohm's character, she played a bright no-nonsense DA, was she suppose to be flirty and happy all the time, for God's sake they are sending people to jail, dealing with murderers and rapist. I think she did a great job. They didn't have to end it like that though, I hope she finds some legal recourse and they have to bring her back, now there would be a plot line. Then if they want to make her Angie Harmon or Stephanie Marsh they can. I, like most men don't care if she is lesbian or bi, she is a doll and a babe, I think she could play any role. GOOD LUCK LIZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually think it is an interesting thing to have done. She was on air for 4 years and her orientation never became an issue. Having is happen at the end and having everyone shocked was an interesting way of saying, gay people are everyday people.
