Project Week is upon us
It is now officially project week here in graduate thesis world. This means, among other things, that we will:-
Go to sleep at wildly different times at
nightmorning. - Go on a frozen food and carry-out diet.
- Not answer many emails. Sorry - we have a lot of writing to do, and we get distracted enough.
- Not publish many updates.
- Be very crabby at the beginning, middle and end of the week. We are giving our preemptive warning and apology. We need sleep, and we push ourselves too hard this week. Be warned.

Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving. I hope that everyone made it home to spend time with thier loved ones. With those who could not make it home, have loved ones visiting them.I myself amtaking a much needed rest - I slept for over 13 hours last night, and I plan on not even lifting my thesis today. Eat Turkey, or for those vegetarians out there, eat tofu-recreations of turkey.

Winter speaks
During my co-op in Boston, oh around December 1999, I learned to play the guitar. My guitar instructor lived/worked a block from where I lived on Comm. Ave. between B.U. and B.C. He produced a few albums for some of his friends, and one of them was this folk artist Joel Cage [Listen to some of his work here. Cage was playing at Club Passim in Harvard Square, and because I "was with the band," or at least with the producer and sound tech for the show I got to go and see Cage for free. It was a great concert, Cage is a very good live performer and I was blown away. Especially his song Winter, which so eloquently captures the distance and emptiness of a winter's night, blanketed with snow. The leftover takeout that collects at my feet
is all that remembers the clandestine retreat.
My exhaust fumes are drifting away down the street.
The stores are all empty. The roads are unfettered and clear.
Winter is here.
An ice veil is forming on the hood of my car.
It shines in the morning and it echoes the stars.
it comes without warning and it knows who you are.
It swarms down around you and engulfs you if all of it's fear.
Winter is here.
I hold this guitar like a gun, taking aim at
every warm body protecting a place
in a united space. A sea of blank faces.
And out of the crowd comes a voice talking louder than
all of the others, blowing my cover,
calling me over and then I discover it's you...
just you.
Behind the laughter of the children at play
is life ever-after, is the end of the day....
the dreams that get broken by the words that you say.
From the distance between comes a voice that's incredibly clear
says winter is here.

UCLA Architecture and Controversy
There appears to be a minor skirmish over at UCLA's School of Arts and Architecture concerning Dr. Sylvia Lavin, the wife of Greg Lynn. I'm not quite sure what is going on, but the students have created a website (here is internet archive snapshop of the now defunct website), which made it into Architecture's Buzz section.
God knows that we have had our share of growing pains in our switch to a new M.Arch, but nothing has brought matters to a head for us to post things on a website. Unfortunately for these students, this press that they are now receiving will most likely be met negatively, and those mentioned in the website will have their backs to the wall. I don't know the whole story, but in our case, we all made the concerted effort to work inside the system, and when we saw something that was amiss, we made it very well known. We were pains in the ass. We kept at the administration, and we didn't always get what we wanted, but I can honestly say that the program is better now. I believe this is due to the changes made to the system, and the feedback we gave, even if the administration did not request it.
I hope the students at UCLA find some method of arbitration, because I [we] have been there - when you don't believe that anything you say or propose is listened to. But you have to understand, you are beinging listened to, at least making noise to draw attention to matters of concern. I hope the administrators at UCLA can open their ears to the students, who appear on face value, to have
legitimate concerns.
UPDATE : 2002.11.26 - Additional Information
The Comments Section Internet Archive Snapshot: Comments Section of the website is extremely telling. it also appears that The New Yorker is collecting information for a story which was prompted by student contact.

One of the computers in studio pings the Plotserver every hour, which pisses the Plotserver off completley. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced. So when have computers become democratic? And when have forcible overthrows been the cause d'jour? The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced? Is this some coup d'tat attempt by the computer BSQWARED? I don't understand. This is the first time I have ever seen this error message, and like I said, the Plotserver bitches about it, especially about the "master browser" part.

We are sinking, abandon Island?
Hidden island off Sicily may reappear. At one point in 1831 the island rose above the sea to a height of 213 feet above sea level, and then receded in 6 months! Holy Crap! In 1831 Italy and the UK squared over ownership of the island so, "...Sicilian divers have gone down and planted a flag on the rock in the hope of claiming it as Italian the moment it rises above the surface", Enzo Boschi, head of Italy's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said. The article says, "Over the centuries, the island has emerged four times, with underwater volcanic eruptions first recorded during the first Punic War of 264-241 BC."Google was kind enough to translate a page from divermac.it which shows some very interesting images, especially this image of the underwater mountain. Very cool stuff [not that great of a translation, though].

Bush is an Angel
Here is an interesting juxtaposition: President Bush as an Angel. I don't know if this was doctored like the last one [you know, that one about how dumb the President has to be because he is reading a book upside down, crapfest] I mean, lets argue about the facts, please - there's enough things about this administration we could argue about, but the fact President Bush is, or is not, stupid, shouldn't be one. Personally, I think it is a cleverly designed plan to veil his true knowledge. I don't think he is the brightest guy [not that I have conversed personally with the President] but I think he is steps smarter than people give him credit for. He has in fact, used the events in the last year to his advantage, and has stifled any discussion about corporate greed with the saber rattling. People accused Clinton of "wag the dog," so I have no idea why this administration gets a pass card from tht scrutiny.» x « · comments (0) · trackBack (0)

Strange Quark Events
Strange Quark possibly collided with the Earth in 1993. So not only do we have to worry about Texas-sized asteroids colliding with earth, but we have to worry about super-dense approaching the speed of light particles that are as old as the creation of the universe! I tell you, we can't catch a break. Strange Quarks are a really interesting phenomenon. The quark has been called the "ultimate building block of the universe" (Zukav, 272). It was theorized by physicist Murray Gell-Mann in 1964 and was named after a word in Finnegans Wake by James Joyce (which proves physicists sense of humor). The quark can be called a particle, only in order to talk about the phenomenon. A bundle of energy is a better idea, and for a long time, the quark could only be proved in a mathematical proof and particle accelerators. For more information about quarks and their significance, look into Bell's Theorem, quantum logic, read The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav and A strange quark plasma by PhysicsWeb.

So Ellen Feiss [much to our enjoyment] is back in the news [see the switch ad that started it all]. There is an interview at the Brown Daily Herald. It is being SlashDotted, so good luck. For those keeping score, we have had an article about Ellen Feiss appearing in Fox Trot, Ellen Feiss switch parodies, Ellen Feiss as a possible Archaeologists find [in the near future], and finally, Ellen Feiss Stoned - which started it all. Whew! I love pop-culture memes. Oh, and the attached Ellen Feiss SlashDot article is pretty funny too [especially to this response to the weed/Benadryl debate].Oh yeah, it's definitely true.

Tao Te Ching
In opposition to Sun Tzu, Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 31:Therefore followers of the Tao never used them.
The wise man prefers the left.
The man of war prefers the right.
Weapons are instruments of fear; they are not a wise man's tools.
He uses them only when he has no choice.
Peace and quiet are dear to his heart.
And victory no cause for rejoicing.
If you rejoice in victory, then you delight in killing;
If you delight in killing, you cannot fulfill yourself.
On happy occasions precedence is given to the left,
On sad occasions to the right.
In the army the general stands on the left,
The commander-in-chief on the right.
This means that war is conducted like a funeral.
When many people are being killed,
They should be mourned in heartfelt sorrow.
That is why a victory must be observed like a funeral.

The annual Buy Nothing Day hosted by Adbusters is coming up again on November 29. I like stuff - you like stuff, but lets not just go buying frivolous items just to have them. Not only is it non-sustainable, but also it just adds to our junk-sphere of products in the market. Remember, they think of us as consumers, not customers. That and all of the employees that work during that weekend will be tired, overworked, and frustrated by the huge volume of consumerism. Instead of shopping, spend time with your family, start a concert, coordinate a poetry slam, swap hand-made gifts. Google and the Olsen Twins
So remember one of my last posts about the Olsen Twins and the infamous Twins Tracker? The fact that those who search for them are a bit, well, fucked in the head? Remember that? Well, we get many of our search engine hits from these people searching for underage porn. Grubbykid is ranked in the Top-50 for the search "Olsen Twins"; ranked 6th for "olsen twins" [note the subtle capitalization]; ranked number 3 for "olsen twins recent"; ranked 8th for "olson twins gallery" [note my typo]; Now that's just on google. Yahoo has me number two for "olsen playboy legal". On any given week, about 75% of my search engine traffic is the result of some Olsen Twin related search.Again, give me a break. 1. They are underage. 2. They aren't that good looking - gain some damn weight already - breakable is not sexy. So for all of those who are looking for Olsen Twins Porn, or Olsen Twins Naked, or Olsen Twins Sex, or even Olsen Twins Fetish [whish is pretty ironic, actually] - sorry, no luck here. Just some one show is [un] silently judging all of you who visit this site. But we have to thank you all for the pure comic value you bring to our day. UPDATE - 2002.11.17 - additional content

We promise to inform The Girl Out West of any future collisions with two tons of steel, aluminum and plastic.Only five more weeks and The Girl Out West will no longer exist, and she becomes some other witty nome de plume that escapes us at the moment. The real process that formed life
Just in from Project Genesis - Internal Corporate Correspondence:
To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology DepartmentThe recent deviations from the specification introduced the following problems
into the system:The mass of the uninterruped light source is significantly greater than the mass of the planet. Due to this, the light source cannot be in orbit around the planet. Instead, it is the planet that is orbiting the light source.
Furthermore, due to the energy output of the light source, we are observing surface temperature that consistently exceeds the spec. by a factor of 2. However if we move the planet further away from the light source, the overall dimentions of the system will grow significantly.
Comments:
A larger system will probably benefit us from the marketing standpoint, but the fact that the planet is rotating around a peripheral device may lead to self esteem issues on the part of the user. Could we perhaps change the Gravitational Constant to compensate?
-- GabrielChanging the Gravitational Constant will result in compatibility problems down the line
-- MichaelWhat difference is it to the user what orbits what? Let Marketing come up with some kind of theory of Relativity.

Earth's magnetic Field may flip
Earth's magnetic field [Magnetosphere] is showing anomalies that hint at magnetic pole flip. The Guardian also has a companion story. The anomalies have already reduced the overall strength of the planet's magnetic field by about 10 per cent. If they continue to grow at the same rate, the Earth's dipole will disappear within just two millennia.

Art or porn?
There is an interesting discussion going on over at MeFi concerning "art" and underage nudity. Of course this sparked all sorts of outrage, some of it I agree with. This has been raised before on MeFi, and has been an issue for a while, especially in Cincinnati. I am at odds here; on one hand stands art and the freedom of speech and expression. On the other hand is of course, pedophilia, which is a disgusting and terrible exploitation of our young. The site in this case seems to be sending a double message: it claims to be a site for naturalist videos, but then has sections on mother and daughter movies. I wonder what that is for. Again, I don't know whether or not I am reading too much into it, and my cultural mores are catching up to me. At some point the issue of intent needs to be brought into the issue: if the intent is to whack off: bad. If the intent to study the human form as an artistic work: good. Who gets to decide this, well not me, but it is an important issue that needs to be addressed. EDIT-2002.11.10 - added informationThe discussion over at MeFi has evolved to a quite sophisticated discussion on naturalism and informed consent. A good read.

Yesterday a car hit me
I was crossing the street near my apartment, a street I have to cross everyday.
This street is not particularly busy, but opens onto a very busy street
[Clifton]. I was about five feet from the curb and I noticed a car coming
toward me about to turn left. The car was still about five or six car lengths
away from the stop-bar, and I knew it had to stop anyway. As I continued to
look at the car, I noticed it was traveling at a large rate of speed - on the
main street there was a long break in traffic, and I knew she wanted to hurry up
and make the turn. I then thought, "That car might not stop in time." As I
continued looking at the car, it was about two or three car lengths away, I
thought, "That bitch isn't looking ahead, and doesn't see me." And sure enough
as I looked, the woman driving the car was as twisted in the seat looking left
as she could be.

Would the last progressive please turn off the light...
Well, yet again, Cincinnati lives up to its image of being 20 years behind. Both the school levy and the Mass Transit levy were defeated. Two essential issues, education and the ability to freely move about the urban space, were defeated. Sprawl and privatization won today. Make no mistake, Cincinnati could have changed for the better today, and the residents of Cincinnati voted no for progress. The Mass Transit issue would have provided light rail service to the center city and the surrounding suburbs, thus increasing the value of those properties, and rejuvenating Over-The-Rhine. The school levy would have raised money for an already cash-strapped system, which is forced to undertake over $1 billion in building renovations. Both issues would have bolstered area spending, fostered civic unity, and would have shown the rest of the world that Cincinnati is no longer a second-tier city. But today that was all put aside for SUV's and McMansions - make no mistake - the defeat of the Mass Transit issue was based on the fear of the "other," the other element invading the suburban fantasyland that Cincinnati is composed of. That sucking sound is the last progressives leaving Cincinnati - will the last progressive turn off the coal burning power plant when they leave?

Earthquake and temporary fear
I haven't had time to write about this, but I was in Pittsburgh for a sustainable building seminar when I heard the words "There are reports of an earthquake in southern..." and then the radio cut out. Now, The Girl Out West is in Southern California...and we had talked about "rumors" of an earthquake that would coincide with the World Series. Being the last time the Series was an all-California game, there was a massive earthquake, and people were speculating that they would have another. So when I heard that there was a major earthquake in southern-wherever, my heart dropped. I scrambled to the radio and searched for a news station, and in the course of five minutes, I heard the news: "Earthquake rocks Southern Italy." I was at once relieved; but at the same time I was revolted by my reaction. Is it human nature to be glad that 29 were dead in return for the well being of someone I care about? Either way, The Girl Out West is safe, and that is what matters.» x « · comments (1) · trackBack (0)

The important election
There is a heated race going on between two archenemies. On one side is the conservative, who aims to guide us down the road of a simpler, more traditional time. On the other side, is the upstart who aims to support the disenfranchised and helpless for the better good of humanity. Who will win? Courier or Helvetica? Only time will tell. It is your duty to go and cast your vote - choose wisely, both fonts are wily and cunning. Be forewarned.
